Don't lose your home or property to fire, storm, theft, lawsuits, or the inability to work and earn a living. There are six areas of a homeowner's policy, each providing coverage for different events. A. Dwelling--if the dwelling is damaged by any covered peril, the policy will pay to fix it based on either the replacement cost of the home or the depreciated value of the home B. Other Structures--covers loss to additional structures you may have on your property such as detached garages and sheds. If you have substantial additional structures, they need to be insured to value C. Personal Property--covers your clothes, electronics, etc. If you have especially valuable equipment, collections, or jewelry and furs, they need to be listed and insured individually. D. Loss of Use--if your home is damaged to such an extent that you have to live elsewhere while it is being repaired, you can receive compensation through this coverage E. Personal Liability--pays damages and defense costs if you are sued for bodily injury or property damage to others, e.g., dog bites, slip and fall on your property F. Medical Payments to Others: If a visitor to your home is injured, their medical bills can be paid without legal liability up to the amount of coverage in the policy (usually $1000) Some factoids: Home foreclosure: 48% of home foreclosures in the United States are due to disability, i.e., the inability to work and earn a living due to sickness or accident. (See how to protect yourself and your family) Animal bites create about 33% of the total claims against the personal liability portion of homeowner's policies Trampolines are one of the leading causes of injury to children in the United States Hail: If you live in Kansas, sooner or later your roof will get hailed on or blown off, or both.
